St Ives Food and Drink festival proves a culinary treat

Over 12,000 food lovers poured onto Porthminster Beach over the weekend to enjoy the annual St Ives Food and Drink festival – twice as many as at last year’s event.

Festival goers on both Saturday and Sunday were spoilt for choice with the food on offer, which varied from crab nachos and gourmet mac and cheese to delightfully chocolatey churros. They were also treated to cooking masterclasses on the Chef Stage throughout the weekend, and there wasn’t a spare seat in the house for all of the celebrity chef demos.

Gracing the Chef Stage were the likes of Nathan Outlaw, who helped the audience perfect a hollandaise sauce; Great British Bake Off winner Frances Quinn, who built some edible sand castles; and last year’s MasterChef winner, Jane Devonshire, who cooked up some gluten-free mozzarella and mushroom muffins.

Jane said: “St Ives is the most beautiful setting for a food festival, you just can’t beat it. Walking along the stalls I saw there’s fresh shellfish for sale, and the produce is so inspiring.
“I get all my fish sent to me from Cornwall because of the quality. It’s so important to support local food and ingredients and it’s been great being here this weekend for the festival.”

Other highlights of the weekend included a pop-up barbeque demo on the beach when chef Ben Quinn from Wood Fired Canteen served up fish tacos to those watching. 

And the festival went on well into the night on Saturday with Kernow King performing and Sandy Acre 7 entertaining the crowds.

Carl Lamb, Business Improvement District manager, said: “It has been an amazing weekend for the festival with thousands of people soaking up the best Cornish food and fantastic atmosphere on the beach. This year was bigger and better than ever, and despite some showers on Saturday, we had more than double the amount of people at the festival than last year.”

The dates have already been set for next year, and the festival will be held on Porthminster Beach on May 12th & 13th.
